Refresh. The Church in Weymouth and Portland
St John’s is part of Refresh which is an ecumenical charity through which churches work together on a wide range of projects in the area.
St John’s Primary School
We have a very close partnership with St John’s Primary School. Children visit the church several times throughout the year for special services and interactive RE lessons. Rev Tom leads Collective Worship in the school on a weekly basis and serves as a School Governor. You can find out more about St John’s School here:
New Wine
Church members take part in the Summer week at New Wine. We also participate in the New Wine Leadership Network.
The Lantern Trust
As a church we work in close partnership with The Lantern together with the NHS, to help provide a range of services and practical support for local people in need – for example working with those who are homeless or have mental health issues. Many Lantern / NHS activities take place in Hope House. St John’s has also played a very active role in providing night shelter for the Safe Sleep Project organised by The Lantern and Refresh.
Our Parish
St John’s is part of the Parish of Radipole and Melcombe Regis Parish – a team of six churches serving a large and diverse area of Weymouth. The Parish clergy work together closely and supportively and there are many friendships across the six churches in the Parish. The Parish work together on many areas of mission hosting regular shared services and events.
We also work closely with a large number of other churches and denominations across Weymouth and beyond, to serve the local community more effectively.
The six Parish Churches are: St Aldhelm’s, St Ann’s, St John’s, St Mary’s, Emmanuel and St Mary’s in Chickerell.
St Mary’s Church in the pedestrianised area of central Weymouth is paired with St John’s Church, and is also overseen by Rev Tom Coopey, Vicar of St John’s Church. St Mary’s has a vibrant mid-week programme of community activities and outreach, in addition to a traditional Sunday morning service.
St Aldhelm’s Church has a congregation of similar size to St John’s Church, and is overseen by the Rector of the Parish, Gordon Crowther, who came to Weymouth in early 2025 with his wife Judy, having led Lee Abbey Christian Retreat and Holiday Centre for many years.
