St John’s Church is on Weymouth sea front.

St John’s Church is on Weymouth sea front, and the sea features prominently in our lives, reminding us of the beauty of God’s creation, in every season of the year – and we confess we often feel like we are on holiday. What a privilege to live and worship in such an amazing place – and to share those blessings with holidaymakers who quite often turn up to our Sunday services.

Weymouth is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK, and tourism has a huge impact on the town, as well as being so close to the Olympic Sailing Centre in Portland.

Almost every weekend for much of the year there is some kind of festival or town activity, whether athletes running the Iron Man, or Half Marathon, or the fun of Carnival Day, the annual Fish Festival in the harbour, RNLI anniversary, Folk Festival, and so on. This is the community in which we live and which we seek to serve, and many of these activities happen right on our doorstep. Our vision is have a visible presence at these kind of events.

The beach is also an incredible place to worship. Baptism services on the beach are a regular highlight of church life in Summer months, as well as a great local witness, On Good Friday we carry a cross along the seafront into Weymouth for a service in the town centre. We’re then on the beach again for the Easter Day sunrise service where we gather with people from across Weymouth to worship Jesus.

A favourite activity for many church members is walking or jogging along the promenade or beach – and you may quickly begin to recognize others from St John’s also out enjoying themselves.

Several of us swim in the sea most mornings from May to October. Others enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing, sailing in dinghies or yachts, around the bay and local coastline or across oceans – even hang gliding. Others enjoy cliff-walking, or sunbathing, or enjoying the view, or jogging along the beach, or digging sandcastles with children or grandchildren. Tom, our vicar has even preached an online sermon from a Kayak!

While we enjoy having fun together, we also have a passion to impact the whole town, to really make a difference in the community.

Working virtually in Weymouth and Portland: many church members have chosen to live in Weymouth or Portland and work remotely for a wide range of companies and industries.  Living in Weymouth offers a different pace of life, with high speed web, and good rail connections to London, Bristol and Reading.

Living and worshiping by the sea.
